Google Maps has long been one of the most comprehensive online map applications and is a very popular tool for tasks such as getting directions and finding local attractions. While most users understand the basic functions of Google Maps, some additional features were introduced through "My Maps", a customization and personalization tool released in 2007. Among the new features introduced with My Maps is the Line Tool, which allows users to draw lines directly on Google Maps and save them to send to other people.
Navigate to Google Maps and log in to your Google account. You will need an account in order to access My Maps. If you do not have an account, you can register for free to obtain one.
On the left side of the map, click on the link titled "My Maps" to open up the customized map making menus. Then click the "Create a New Map" button.
Create a title and add a description for your map in the fields on the left side menu. Choose whether or not you want your map to be publicly shared or private, and mark the check box appropriately.
Click on the Line Tool, denoted by a zig-zag line icon at the top-left corner of the map. On your map, click on a point to begin drawing your lines. You can continue clicking to add more points to the line.
Double-click a point on your map to end the line creation tool.
